Intikhab Alam not to Tour Zimbabwe as Team Manager

Intikhab Alam dropped as Team Manager

PCB announced that Intikhab Alam would not accompany the national team as the manager for the upcoming Zimbabwe tour. Intikhab, has held different positions with the Pakistan national team. In his recent stint with the team he has been coach and then manager since October 2008. Naveed Akram Cheema would be touring with the team as manager. Subhan Ahmad, PCB’s Chief Operating Officer, insisted that the change was in accordance with the standard regulations of the board.

“Changing the manager is not performance related. We appoint manager on series to series basis. Intikhab is also head of the development program at the National Cricket Academy and wants to devote more time to the ongoing programs, Cheema is a member of the governing board, so he has been appointed manager for the Zimbabwe series,” Subhan said. PCB has always felt proud in stating that team managers and team captains are announced on a series to series basis, a notion on the genius sitting in the PCB can understand. As a cricket fan, we can only say that consistency brings better performance. Look at the Clive Lloyd example, he was mainly responsible for building the undefeatable West Indies team of the 70s and 80s. Had he not been sure of his own position in the team, what sort of team building could he have done. I am not trying to defend Intikhab Alam as a great manager but I feel that who ever is given the responsibility should be done so on a more permanent fashion. This is how all other cricketing nations do.

It was Intikhab Alam’s tour report of the West Indies tour on which the PCB removed allrounder Shahid Afridi as the captain of the Pakistan One-day team. Intikhab Alam and coach Waqar Younis had described Afridi’s captaincy as poor. Intikhab had went on to state that Afridi was responsible for the defeats that Pakistan suffered in the last two ODIs against the West Indies. Pakistan won the five-match series 3-2.

Who is Naveed Akram Cheema?

Cheema is a member of the governing board and managing director of Wapda, the country’s largest power supply corporation. He has previously toured with the Pakistan A team to the West Indies. How does being an MD of a power generation company qualify him to manage the national cricket team is a mistery.
